Move over charcuterie boards, the butter boards are taking over! They’re easy to assemble, they’re frugal, delicious and they are beautiful! You’re probably thinking…what kind of food sorcery is this? Trust me folks, it’s of the best and most delicious kind!
Raise your hand if you love warm bread spread with soft flavorful butter! Lord knows, I sure do! Prepare yourself, that simple bread and butter deliciousness just got even better!
Full disclosure, I can’t take all the credit…my daughter-in-law saw it on TikTok and shared the idea with me. We then decided I HAD to make it.
The Main Ingredient In A Butter Board Is Obviously Butter
Choose your favorite brand of butter. Just make sure it is real butter though. Margarines are not welcome at this party!
I realize butter is kind of expensive right now. But it’s the base to this snack board and basically your only big expense…especially if you have an herb garden or bits of leftover fresh herbs to use up.
Frugal and Delicious Butter Boards Need Fresh Herbs
My herb garden has been producing well this year. So off to the herb garden I went, to choose herbs for the butter board. I snipped a flavorful assortment of regular thyme, lemon thyme, basil, chives and oregano. I didn’t need a lot, because all that fresh flavor goes a long way.
Edible Flowers Add So Much Color And Flavor
To add additional flavor and color to the butter board, I chose yellow marigolds, orange marigolds and lavender flowers. These were all flowers around our front porch, so they were no effort to pick at all. Plus, they added the perfect Fall flair of colors and textures to the butter board.
Add A Sprinkle Of Sea Salt
To elevate the flavor of the butter, herbs and edible flowers, bring on a little sea salt. These chunky, crystals add shimmer as well as flavor.
A Little Sweet With The Salty
Honey on a butter board…I’m not going to lie, I was a bit hesitant about it at first. But I decided to try it anyways. So, I brought out the jar of very special honey that I purchased at the Farmers Market earlier this summer. I save it for special uses and this was definitely one of those times. That drizzle of honey with all the butter, salt, herbs and flowers brought everything together in glorious harmony. Please use real honey, not that cheap corn syrup infused nonsense!
When Making Frugal And Delicious Butter Boards, Some Assembly Is Required
There’s really no recipe. As Carla Hall would say…”Let your free flag fly!” Even though the butter board does require some assembly. It’s very simple and very versatile. Choose the ingredients to suit your tastes. Since we were having lasagna for dinner along with garlic bread, I chose Italian themed herbs for this butter board…like basil, oregano and thyme.
To Make A Frugal and Delicious Butter Board, Here’s What You Need…
- Select your favorite food safe cutting board or charcuterie board

The honey that I used to drizzle on the butter board came from this Farmers Market. It’s a wonderful place!
