Curtains and the means to hang them are expensive
After moving into our new home, I discovered how expensive curtains, rods and the hardware to hang them could be. Pre-made curtains are expensive and none of them matched the look I desired. I needed to find creative and frugal ways to add curtains to our windows.
Single decor for a dual purpose room
Since our guest room also doubles as a space for our little grandsons when they visit, the room needs to be both welcoming and fun. By using an array of farm decor from our former dining room, it was super frugal to decorate the room. The windows already had mini blinds on them, but they needed colorful curtains to soften the edges and add character.
Saved money by making my own curtains
Grateful I’m from a generation that had Home Economics in school where I learned to iron and sew. Gathering a colorful farm themed fabric from my stock pile, I decided to make my own curtains for the guest room. Using my sewing machine to stitch rod pockets, side seams and hems, I transformed each piece of fabric into a functional curtain. If you can’t sew or don’t have a sewing machine no worries, you can use iron-on fusible web strips. I had to use them when my sewing machine broke as I was sewing the curtains. Thankfully, I had a roll of fusible web on-hand from a previous project to complete the task .
Here is a link to the fusible web I used to fuse the seams and hems for each curtain that I was not able to sew. It’s super easy and I highly recommend using it if you don’t sew.
Getting creative to save money on hardware
I walked up and down many aisles at our local Lowe’s store searching for a hardware solution to hang the curtains. I excitedly discovered these fabulous black iron drawer pulls in the cabinet hardware aisle. The best part of the discovery, they cost less than $2.00 each. By turning them upright they served the intended purpose I needed to hang the curtains. And they were super easy to install…you just have to screw them into the wall….taaa daaah!!

Frugal option for a functional curtain rod
I purchased a wooden dowel (just .99 cents each) to use as a curtain rod. I cut the dowel long enough to go through the length of the rod pocket and through the cabinet pulls on each side to hold the curtain in place. Super easy, super simple! To add more character and a finished look to the dowels, they can be painted and decorations added to the ends. Note: be sure to use a dowel strong enough to support the weight of the curtains. A flimsy rod could show an unsightly bend or even break under the weight of the fabric.
The finished curtains are frugal and perfect
With a total cost of less than $10.00…I’m thrilled with the results and the money saving options used to make and hang these curtains. Plus, they perfectly accent the room and the styles highlight the beautiful country views outside of each window.
