How To Make Frugal Dish Towel Pillows

Frugal dish towel pillows are a simple and inexpensive way to add comfort and style to many places within a home.

When I was unable to find any affordable pillows that matched our decor, I decided to make my own pillows using dish towels with that decor theme.

My blue farm truck obsession turned into a decor theme

Dollar General came out with this affordable and fabulous decor line of blue farm truck items. The blue farm truck is accented with yellow lemons on a gray and white check patterned background-perfect colors for our farmhouse.

I already had the blue farm truck, so I purchased the tablecloth, dish towels, oven mitts and the matching floor mat-which was an extremely rare and fortuitous find a couple of weeks later. Suffice to say, I am absolutely totally obsessed with this theme.

I originally intended to display the decor just in our kitchen. But, after I used the tablecloth atop a table on our front porch, I liked the look so much that I decided to continue the whole theme out there.

Now that I’ve expressed my blue farm truck obsession, here’s how I made the dish towel pillows…

Frugal dish towel pillows are “sew” simple to make

*To make the pillows, I started by using one of the blue farm truck themed dish towels from Dollar General.

*Remove the tags and fold the towel in half, with the right sides of the dish towel together evenly. The right side is the outside surface of the towel with the design on it. Sew the 3 open sides together (not the folded side).

*When sewing the dish towel pillow…be sure to leave a small opening about the size of your hand (along one side or at the bottom) to stuff the pillow.

*After the pillow is sewn, turn it inside out through the opening. Now the design is on the outside. Using the plastic pointed end of a seam ripper, place it inside the pillow and gently push the corners of the pillow outward to form a point vs. a rounded corner. This step gives the pillow a better appearance.

*The next step is to fill the the dish towel pillow using a polyfill/fiberfill stuffing. Filling the pillow is a simple process. All you have to do is remove bunches of stuffing from the bag of polyfill and push the bunches of the stuffing into the pillow until it is fully stuffed. Be sure to even out any lumps along the way.

The final step…seal the dish towel pillow closed

*Now that the pillow is stuffed, the opening needs to be sealed. Sealing it can be done by sewing it closed or using hot glue. I chose to seal the opening with hot glue, just because it was faster and easier for me at the time.

Be sure to tuck the seams together inside the pillow and make sure the seal is even. Once the opening is sealed, the dish towel pillow is done.

After stuffing the dish towel pillow, glue the opening closed.

One pillow done, now to make 4 more pillows

Unfortunately, I only had 2 more blue farm truck dish towels. They alone, would not be enough to make 4 more pillows.

Looking for an option, I went back to Dollar General and found these fabulous blue check patterned dish towels for $2.00 each-they are a perfect compliment to the design of the blue truck dish towels. So, I purchased 2 of the blue check towels to make the additional pillows.

To make the additional dish towel pillows…

To make the next set of dish towel pillows, just cut both towels in half (horizontally at the folds).

Place the right side of the farm truck towel against the right side of the blue check towel. And voila, the start of a reversible pillow!

By cutting each dish towel in half I was able to create 2 fabulous reversible accent pillows that cost me a little over $3.00.

Use the same processes to make these dish towel pillows as the original pillow shown above. Just sew the dish towels together, stuff and seal.

Here are the finished pillows displayed in the chairs on our front porch. Having reversible pillows is a frugally fabulous decor option.

And, did you notice that gorgeous blue accent rug? It’s that super amazing bargain I got at Walmart awhile ago-ONLY $9.90!! I absolutely LOVE it! It’s the perfect accent to tie all the decor together and add an extra element of welcoming comfort to our front porch. https://www.facebook.com/frugalanddelicious

The frugal conclusion…

My frugal dish towel pillows are a total success. I spent $7.00 on dish towels to make 5 pillows. And I have plenty of polyfill stuffing for other projects. The look I achieved with these dish towels pillows is perfectly priceless! I couldn’t be happier with them.
