This is quite possibly one of my favorite trash to treasure decor projects. I transformed an old door into an amazing piece of wall art, complete with a shelf. It’s the perfect accent for our western themed farmhouse bathroom.
Challenging my abilities by building this wall decor
I had to challenge my abilities a lot with this project. It was the first time I ever used power tools or needed to discover different methods to highlight the character of the door and achieve the result I envisioned.
My husband used to do these tasks for me. When he became disabled, the tasks fell to me to take on and master. Thankfully, he extends many helpful hints my way.
Starting the trash to treasure decor project…
For this trash to treasure project I started with…half of an old door, a paint scraping tool, a wire brush and sandpaper.
The trash to treasure processes of transforming an old door into wall decor…
I began by scraping off the old flaking paint from the door and the board with the closing hardware.
After scraping off the loose paint, I used a wire brush to remove more of the old paint, exposing the antique wood and unique patina.
Adding an accent color…
To add an accent color, I used a paint brush and applied a coat of turquoise paint. To give the paint a distressed look, I used paper towels to wipe off some of the paint.
Frugal paint tip…
Lowe’s sells sample sized versions of paints that can be custom colored. The smaller sized options are money savers, so you don’t need to purchase a quart or gallon of paint to do small projects.
The paint sample is an 8 ounce container. It provided enough paint for the trim around the vanity mirror, the trim around the window and also as an accent color on the light fixture, toothbrush holder and for this door project. There is still paint left in the sample for touchups when needed.
The door and the board have been painted with the turquoise accent color and are being positioned together for the next step.
Creating a shelf from the door…
Using a cordless drill and screws, I attached the board with the closing hardware to the base of the door to create a functional shelf.
To hang the project…
To hang the project, I attached three saw tooth hangers by using a hammer and nails so that I could place the project safely on the wall.
Rusted metal adds character
Frugality aside, one of the best parts about using a trash to treasure item for decor is the character that comes with that item. I absolutely love all the old rusted hardware on this project. It creates a rustic flair with no effort.
For additional trash to treasure decor, I used an old rusted horseshoe that was found in our former barn. I attached the horseshoe to one of the boards for an appropriately themed western decoration. Plus the rusted horseshoe looks great with the rusted hinge at the top of the door.
From an Old Door to Amazing Wall Decor
This project transformed an old door into amazing and functional wall art. After the project was complete, I hung it on the wall in our bathroom. I added a pair of my husband’s old spurs to the shelf for additional decoration.
A trash to treasure accent piece for our western themed bathroom
I LOVE how the wall shelf looks in our bathroom! It’s a perfect accent piece that compliments our turquoise and brown western theme. I couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out.
Trash to treasure projects are the best kinds
My husband used to fuss at me for moving this broken door from our former home to our new home. After seeing the completed project, he stopped fussing about it anymore. Creating such a frugal work of art to fill the space and highlight the theme of our bathroom helped him realize how worthwhile this project was.
It does help to save certain things to create frugal projects. My husband already had the tools, screws and the saw tooth hangers. And, I already had the door, the paint and the horseshoe. All those things combined, made this project practically free.
I love creating trash to treasure projects. They are extremely rewarding and are easy on the budget. I love finding creative ways to reduce, reuse and recycle various items. I can’t wait to show you more of them.
Take Care. Be Safe. Virtual Hugs.
